These two are the mushroom powders people actually buy, and until we priced them on Amazon we thought this was a close call decided on flavour. It is not any more.

Round one: the price, which used to be a tie

Both of these list at $50.00 on their own stores. On Amazon, Four Sigmatic is $17.01 and MUD\WTR is $49.99. So the real comparison is 57 cents a cup against $1.33, and MUD\WTR costs more than twice as much per serving.

MUD\WTR’s $40.00 refill bag is the right way to buy it and closes some of the gap. It does not close all of it.

Round two: the label

Four Sigmatic publishes 500 mg each for five named mushrooms.
Four Sigmatic publishes 500 mg each for five named mushrooms.

Four Sigmatic wins and it is not particularly close. Five mushrooms, five numbers, each named as an extract.

MUD WTR publishes one blend total on the tin, and a per-mushroom number only inside a promotional graphic.
MUD WTR publishes one blend total on the tin, and a per-mushroom number only inside a promotional graphic.

MUD\WTR gives you 2,240 mg for the whole blend and stops. The even split would be 560 mg each, and a promotional graphic on the brand’s own listing does publish exactly that figure for lion’s mane. So the number exists. It is just not on the panel, which means the tin in your kitchen cannot tell you it.

MUD\WTR’s number is bigger. Four Sigmatic’s numbers are usable. Usable wins.

Round three: the taste, which is the one that decides it in practice

Four Sigmatic tastes like instant coffee, because it mostly is instant coffee. That is a feature if you are replacing coffee and a limitation if you were hoping for something new.

MUD\WTR does not taste like coffee at all. It is cacao and chai and earth, and it is polarising in a way instant coffee is not. The people who stay on MUD\WTR for years stayed for this, not for the mushrooms.

Verdict: Four Sigmatic on the label and on the price, and the price is no longer close. If you already know you love the taste of MUD\WTR, that is a better reason to buy it than anything on its panel, and it is a perfectly good one. Just buy the refill bag.
